The Project

The Breed Project is a fine art photography project with the goal of photographing all of the 189 American Kennel Club (AKC) breeds. The domesticated dog (Canis lupus familiaris) exhibits greater diversity than any other single species on the planet. This diversity is the product of their being domesticated about 15,000 years ago and a long history, although predominantly over the last 200 years, of selective breeding.

Today, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes 189 breeds of dog and the list is growing.  These breeds represent an astounding diversity of morphology (size and shape), color, behavior, and intended purpose.  The Breed Project will explore this incredible diversity by photographing all 189 breeds.  It will be equal parts a cataloging of the distinct physical features that makes each of these breeds unique and a simple aesthetic celebration of Man’s Best Friend.

Following the Tour

I am very excited to announce the BACK ON BLACK TOUR beginning October 2016!!!

Over the course of the last 2 plus years and 3 national tours,  TBP has visited 35 states and photographed over 500 dogs in pursuit of the project goals. The Back On Black Tour will be my biggest yet in every respect and is the first to focus exclusively on studio images! I hope to photograph more dogs and more breeds than any previous tour, and work directly towards our goal of photographing all 189 of the AKC recognized breeds in the studio ‘On Black’.

You can keep up with all that’s happening with the tour by ‘liking’ the FB page and subscribing to the blog and our newsletter for updates. Wherever you are, whether you’re interested in having your club host a studio day or just want to say hi, please drop us a line. We’d love to hear from you!!!!
